At 2 p.m. on Friday, May 19, members of CWA Local 7110 walked off the job and joined the picket line on Elmore Drive.
Richardson said the two main issues are commissions for the workers in the company's cell phone stores nationwide and health benefits for all AT&T employees.
The strikers include as many as 21,000 AT&T wireless workers, including those manning retail stores.
Dara Kheang says that since he started as a sales associate at AT&T's Portland store 9 years ago, his effective pay has dropped by more than $5,000. "We have the ability to service customers' calls by routing them among available call centers across our network".
AT&T is facing a weekend strike of almost 40,000 employees, with workers threatening to walk off the job at 3 p.m. ET Friday if the company does not "present serious contract proposals", according to the Communications Workers of America. Others are employed in call centers spread out across the country.

The groups on strike represent four different union contracts, the CWA said.
