Hodgkinson, 66, wounded House Rep. Steve Scalise before he was fatally shot by police who had been guarding the House majority whip.
Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Alabama) told FM TALK 1065 that Hodgkinson was wounded around home plate and "security detail was able to incapacitate him".
Stocky, with graying hair and a well-trimmed moustache-goatee combination, Hodgkinson was an ardent supporter of Sanders, the feisty hero of the left who nearly defeated Hillary Clinton a year ago in a tough fight for the Democratic White House nomination. Hodgkinson had been a volunteer on Sanders' presidential campaign.
President Donald Trump said in a news conference Wednesday that the suspected shooter in the GOP baseball shooting has died from his injuries. Bernie Sanders later said Hodgkinson had volunteered on his campaign, and Sanders condemned the shooting.
"Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society, and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms", Sanders said.
Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois resident, was killed when police returned fire this morning.
Police say it's too early to say if the shooting was politically motivated. But CNN's Dana Bash reported that the shooting was deliberate and not a random act. "It's Time to Destroy Trump & Co".
In July 2012, Hodgkinson, citing MSNBC's left-leaning host Rachel Maddow, wrote that a relative handful of wealthy people are chiefly responsible for funding Republican Party campaigns and said, "We need to vote all Republicans out of Congress".
House Speaker Paul Ryan has told his fellow lawmakers that "an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us".

Sills said investigators now have nighttime surveillance video that apparently shows the two men between Madison and the quarry. Authorities warned that the men, who had escaped with the guards' 9 mm pistols, were considered very risky .
Watson said the deputy on Wednesday recalled Hodgkinson as being "very cordial".
Hodgkinson also had a history of violence.
Authorities believe Hodgkinson had been in the Alexandria area since March, living out of a cargo van and not working, Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Tim Slater said. "(Bernie Sanders & Democratic Socialism)", tweeted Ann Coulter. He said Hodgkinson was not a staffer and had no formal role in the campaign.
Hodgkinson, who worked as a building inspector, volunteered for the Mr Sanders' unsuccessful presidential campaign past year.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, echoed Davis' sentiment.
"Please take a moment today to cherish those you love, and always remember those who serve and keep us safe", Trump said before concluding. McAuliffe is in a state with some of the most lax gun regulations in the country.
