Clarke, a tough-on-crime conservative Democrat, announced last month that he was taking a job as assistant secretary in DHS's Office of Public Engagement.
Clarke announced in a radio interview in May that he was taking the job. To be fair, Clarke's claim that he was up for a DHS position came entirely from him and his own camp.
Peterson added, "Last Tuesday Sheriff Clarke met with President Trump and discussed other roles where the Sheriff could be of greater assistance to the President, and the Country".
Clarke adviser Craig Peterson said the sheriff believes he is of better use to President Trump "in a more aggressive role".
Jury deadlocks in Cosby trial; mistrial declared
Gloria Allred , a feminist lawyer who counts dozens of Cosby's accusers among her clients, issued a warning to the comedian. Cosby stood outside the courtroom as his lawyers welcomed the mistrial, but the actor himself did not comment on the news.
A DHS spokesman said by email Sunday that Clarke is no longer being considered for a position within DHS, though the agency had never confirmed Clarke's appointment.
"The sheriff is reviewing options inside and outside of government", Peterson told the Post.
Clarke who gained fame as a vocal supporter of Trump during the presidential campaign is a controversial figure in his own right.
Clarke has also been criticized for his track record as Milwaukee County Sheriff. Clarke isn't among the seven staffers prosecutors said he wasn't directly involved in the events that led to the death of 38-year-old Terrill Thomas but the death happened under Clarke's leadership, which his critics say is enough cause for his firing.
