White House Correspondent Jim Acosta on Monday said White House press secretary Sean Spicer is "just kind of useless" as tensions continue to escalate between the Trump administration and the press corps.
Spicer would likely hand off duties for the daily briefings, but continue to manage the communications and press office, according to the network. Traditionally, the White House carves out separate roles and staffs for the press secretary and communications director. This White House has cut back the number of briefings, virtually eliminated the presidential press conference, stopped releasing the White House visitor logs, and now they are forbidding recording of the press conferences.
He called the situation "bizarre", and said, "I don't know why everyone is going along tight this". "It feels like we're sort of slowly but but surely being dragged into what is a new normal in this country".
Spicer began his tenure as White House press secretary by taking to the White House briefing room and criticizing reporters for the coverage of Trump's inauguration crowd size.
Fighter jets deal shows deep U.S. support
The Turkish chief diplomat held talks with Qatar's emir and foreign minister on Wednesday and plans to visit Saudi Arabia. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, on a Gulf tour trying to help broker an end to the crisis, defended the deal.
Some reporters, including The New York Times' White House correspondent, Maggie Haberman, reacted with surprise to the news that Spicer has been tasked with finding his own replacement. Spicer and Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders have continued to hold briefings, but they have on occasion prohibited cameras.
"I don't understand why we covered that gaggle today, quite honestly, Brooke", Acosta said.
"Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I think that the White House for the United States of America should have these questions answered on camera so we can see what they're saying", he said. "If they can't give us the answers to the questions on camera or where we can record the audio, they are basically pointless at this point".
