Over 1.6 billion Muslims around the world would be celebrating the occasion of Eid-Ul-Fitr this weekend, which marks the end of the holiest month on the Islamic calendar.
But for such a major global event, working out when it will happen is surprisingly complicated - as Ahmen Khawaja and Amir Rawash explain.
Many Muslims display this thanks giving by donations and food to those less fortunate than themselves. The Islamic Calendar is based on the lunar cycle. Ramadan 2017 is a month of discipline, self-control, and patience and to inculcating good behavior.
The markets across the Valley, including the summer capital Srinagar, wore a festive look as people came out in large numbers to shop.
The sighting of the crescent will mark the end of the month of Ramadan during which Muslims observed fast.
Islamic groups across Southern California are responding to an alert for increased security as the month of Ramadan comes to a close this weekend. Many Muslims also recite the takbir (declaration of faith) on the way to the prayer ground and take part in Zakat al-Fitr (charitable contributions).
UNHCR Chief Visits Refugees In South Sudan
Uganda, which host almost half of the displaced South Sudanese, has been praised for having an accommodative refugee policy. The UNHCR said the largest recipient of new asylum applications was Germany with more than 722,400 registered past year .
But within Islam there is debate over when this begins. The end of the holy month of Ramadan will be either June 25 or 26, depending on when the new moon is seen.
Moon Sighting Commitees, also known as Hilal Committees, in UAE and other Arab states will also meet soon after the Maghrib prayers today and accordingly decide the first day of Eid.
Moon sighting is a tradition from the numerous traditions of Prophet (ﷺ) that has been closely adhered to by the Muslims for over 1400 years.
Muslims in many other countries then follow suit.
After receiving testimonies of sighting moon in Peshawar, the local Ruet-e-Hilal Committee in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), chaired by clerics of Peshawar's Masjid Qasim Ali Khan, has announced Eid-ul-Fitr on Sunday.
As Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan, let us all use this time to reflect on the benefits of Australia's rich diversity and know that Australia's multiculturalism is something that we should all be proud of.
