The free Doom Xbox Live weekend is being offered in celebration of Doom's special "Update 6.66", a new free update that came earlier this week that added a new multiplayer progression system, a bunch of UI, performance, and bug fixes. As all progress from the free event is transferred to the full game for anyone that decides to purchase it, this may be an excellent opportunity to see if the game does live up to all the praise it received past year.
The announcement comes in a post on Bethesda.net, which says that the company has "retired the season pass", and is making "all of the multiplayer DLC content available to all players". Instead we got nine new multiplayer maps, three new guns, three more playable demons, and some other doodads. For those who have been on the fence about picking up Doom, this will allow them to see why the title received so many accolades in 2016.
The main highlight of update 6.66 is the revised multiplayer progressions system, which now makes it easier to work towards specific items you want.
Revised Progression System - The revised progression system will alter when and how players unlock additional guns, demons, equipment, and all of the player and weapon customization options. That means players can now pursue specific items they crave by focusing on related challenges, rather than simply hammering on everything and hoping for the best. Version 6.66 unlocks all paid DLC for every user, in addition to some new quality of life improvements to multiplayer progression.
DOOM is delivering a treat for new players and veterans alike with its latest update. The publishers think that all of the players, old and new, will like this new system and will not have any long term problems. You'll keep all your unlocks, but what remains will be acquired through the new system. Longtime players will want to know that their levels will be resetting to zero. The free weekend will have a staggered release: 9 a.m. PT / noon ET on July 20 for Xbox One; 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET on July 20 for PC; and 9 a.m. PT / noon ET on July 27 for PS4. The free weekend comes with access to two levels of DOOM's campaign, Arcade Mode and unlimited access in multiplayer and SnapMap modes.
Also on the "free stuff" front, Doom is getting a free weekend across all platforms. Veteran players will also be receiving a special badge, and anyone who has made it to the max Slayer level will get recognized with a badge for that as well.
