Two other suicide bombers also reportedly blew themselves up at the gate of an internally displaced person (IDP) camp. They detonated their explosives nearly simultaneously, Lawan Kalli said. They are held responsible for killing at least 143 people before Tuesday's bombings and weakening the army's control.
"Our village is right at the entrance into Konduga town and that is where both the camp and the makeshift market are situated, which made us an instant target point of the insurgents", Kalli said.
Kalli says 80 others were injured and were rushed to the hospital in Maiduguri, about 30 kilometres (18 miles) away.
Even with a curfew on most northern cities and security officers out hunting for Boko Haram suspects, the Nigerian government is still struggling to deal with the islamist insurgency.
While traders were trying to close their shops and evacuate their wares, two female bombers hit the market "almost simultaneously", said another civilian vigilante, Usman Grema.
Nigeria's military previous year wrested back large swaths of territory from the Islamist insurgents.
