Amazon has announced plans to invest United States dollars 5 billion in a second headquarters in the US. It plans to spend over $5 billion on the project, called Amazon HQ2, and hire as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs. Amazon's campus in the northwest U.S. state of Washington now employs more than 40,000 people scattered across 33 buildings and 750,000 square meters (8.1 million square feet) of office space, according to a company fact sheet.
Amazon was founded in Seattle in 1994, and is still headquartered in the Emerald City. Amazon lists a number of "core preferences", including a 45-minute drive to an global airport, mass transit (such as a tram or subway stop) connected directly to the site, and at least 500,000 square feet of office space available by 2019.
Cities that want to be considered by Amazon are being asked to submit proposals detailing the reasons that the company should position its second headquarters in their community. "Also, we've worked with Amazon in the past when they opened their distribution center and they know that we can be a good partner", Cole said in a statement.
