Modi's decision to accompany his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe, to the 16th century Sidi Saiyed mosque in Ahmedabad marks an important turn in his political evolution.
Abe will arrive on a two-day India visit during which he and Modi will hold the 12th India-Japan annual summit. This will be the fourth annual summit between Modi and Abe, who will review the progress in Indo-Japanese cooperation under the Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
In their November summit, the two will re-confirm strengthening of the Japan-U.S. alliance to cope with North Korea's provocations, and deepen their cooperation in urging countries to follow through with new U.N. Security Council sanctions on Pyongyang.

In a first, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe would take part in a road show in Ahmedabad in Gujarat on Wednesday when the latter begins his visit. "We are thankful to the Japanese PM for selecting Gujarat for his visit to India", Gujarat Chief Secretary JN Singh said, adding that 15 investment agreements for Gujarat would be signed during the visit. During that visit, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe flew down to Kyoto to offer a warm welcome to our prime minister.
Japan and India have deepened their defence ties, with Tokyo joining trilateral maritime drills also involving the US Navy in the Indian Ocean in July. Recently when India was locked-in with China at the Doklam, Japan supported India and said that no country should try to change the border unilaterally.
While a detailed joint statement is still in the works, reports quoting official sources say, the two sides are expected to sign a $1.3 billion deal for India's purchase of United States 2i amphibious aircraft built by ShinMayWa of Japan, perhaps the first defence purchase from Japan.
Abe's two-day visit to Ahmedabad comes ahead of Modi's 67th birthday on Sunday.
The Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train will set the pace of running trains at speeds of over 250 km per hour, covering the 508-km distance in just two hours and seven minutes as against the existing travel time of 7-8 hours.
